OU's annual 'Big Event' needs work for volunteers
NORMAN, Okla. – Over 150 community organizations
in the Norman and Oklahoma City areas will be hosting
volunteers on the day of The Big Event—OU’s
official day of community service—which is designed
to say “thank you” to the surrounding community.
Although the response from community organizations
has been tremendous so far, The Big Event is still recruiting
school, churches and non-profit organizations to serve
on the day of the event. The deadline has been extended
to Thursday, March 23, for organizations interested
in participating.
Mark Bicket, chairman of The Big Event, says that there
are currently more volunteers than there are places
to send them, which prompted the deadline extension.
“With the large numbers of volunteers that we
have each year, it becomes difficult to match the number
of organizations where we can send volunteers to those
volunteering,” said Mark Bicket, Chairman of The
Big Event. “We would like to help all those in
need of getting projects done and giving back to the
community that has given us so much.”
The Big Event began at Texas A&M University in
1982 and has since spread to 60 university campuses
across the country, making The Big Event the largest
student-run community service effort in the nation.
This year at OU alone, over 5,000 students, faculty
and staff are expected to participate in the event.
